Herbert R. Axelrod, a world renowned ichthyologist, explorer, author and publisher, spent more than 40 years exploring the jungles of the world, discovering tropical fish for hobbyists worldwide. He discovered more than 560 new species of fish (including the cardinal tetra, now one of the most popular aquarium fish). The scientific name of the cardinal tetra is Paracheirodon axelrodi. Dr. Axelrod has also authored hundreds of books, translated into every major modern language and selling more than 100 million copies. He founded "Tropical Fish Hobbyist",the most widely read tropical fish monthly magazine in the world. To celebrate his love of music, Dr. Axelrod wrote and published dozens of authoritative works on the subject. His accomplishments have been recognized with major awards and honors bestowed by universities, professional and scientific societies, industry and trade groups. These awards include the Smithson Silver Medal, the James Smithson Founder's Medal and a life membership in the James Smithson Society.
