Herman Cain (b. 1946), who earned college degrees in math and computer science, was CEO of Godfather's Pizza from 1986-1996, restoring the company's profitability and eventually organizing a buyout which separated it from former parent company Pillsbury. He was Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board of Kansas City (1995-1996) and CEO of the National Restaurant Association (1996-1999). Although he had never held elective office, Cain was no stranger to politics, having taken an active role in defeating President Clinton's health care proposal, advised Presidential candidate Bob Dole (1996), and sought a US Senate seat from Georgia. His bid for the Republican Presidential nomination in 2012 was a roller coaster. His appealing personality and strong business background vaulted him to the lead in national polls for a time, but  his unfamiliarity with foreign policy and allegations of sexual misconduct ultimately proved his undoing, at least for this election cycle.
