Horace Scudder (1838-1902) is best known for his children's books, in particular his Bodley Books and the anthology The Children's Book. He was also a very successful editor, holding editing positions at The Atlantic Monthly, The Riverside Magazine, and as series editor for the "American Commonwealths Series" for Houghton Mifflin. However, despite his accomplishments as an editor and children's writers, one of his best remembered works is the very lengthy titled textbook A History of the United State of America Preceded By a Narrative of the Discovery and Settlement of North America and of the Events Which Led to the Independence of the Thirteen English Colonies for the Use of Schools and Academies.
