Biography | show moreshow less
Axton (1938-1999) came naturally to songwriting. His mother Mae Burton Axton wrote Elvis Presley's hit, "Heartbreak Hotel." Hoyt's greatest successes were in songwriting, for musicians as diverse as The Kingston Trio ("Greenback Dollar", 1962), Three Dog Night ("Joy to the World", 1971, not the Christmas carol, of course) and Ringo Starr ("The No No Song", 1975). His own hit songs, vocals with guitar, hit the country charts, including "Boney Fingers" (1974) and "A Rusty Old Halo" (1979). He had many appearances on television and supporting roles in films, usually as a "good ole boy" (The Black Stallion, 1979; Gremlins, 1984).
