Ira D. Sankey (1840-1908) was a gospel singer and composer known as "the Sweet Singer of Methodism." A Union veteran of the Civil War, he often traveled to revival meetings in the company of famed evangelist Dwight Moody. Sankey published a compilation of his religious hymns, Sacred Songs and Solos, which is still in use. More than seven decades after his death, he was enshrined in the Gospel Music Hall of Fame (1979).
