Biography | show moreshow less
Isidor Philipp (1863-1958), studied under Frederic Chopin and Camille Saint-Saens. A virtuoso performer, he toured Europe between 1890 and 1901, but thereafter preferred to concentrate on teaching. A close friend and interpreter of Claude Debussy, he was considered the leading authority of Debussy after the latter's death. He taught piano at the Paris Conservatory from 1893 to 1934. He wrote influential instruction manuals, but many of his own compositions are considered very difficult to play. He fled to the US during the German occupation, and the Nazis confiscated his collection of rare musical instruments.
