JAMES B. SIKKING
Born: March 05, 1934 in Los Angeles, California
Died: July 13, 2024 in Los Angeles, California
James Barrie Sikking was born on March 5, 1934, in Los Angeles and he was an American actor known for his work in television and film, particularly during the 1970s through the 1990s.
Sikking was raised in Los Angeles and attended the University of California, Los Angeles, where he studied theater. He also served in the United States Army before beginning his professional acting career. His early work included guest appearances on television series during the 1960s and 1970s, a period in which he developed a steady career as a character actor.
He achieved wider recognition for his role as Lieutenant Howard Hunter on the NBC police drama Hill Street Blues. Appearing throughout the series’ run, his portrayal of the paramilitary-style officer became one of the program’s recurring characters. During this period, he also appeared in films such as Outland (1981), starring Sean Connery.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Sikking took on another prominent television role as Dr. David Howser, the father of the title character in the ABC series Doogie Howser, M.D.. This role marked a shift from his earlier police and authority figure portrayals to a family-centered dramatic series.
Additional film credits include appearances in Ordinary People (1980), directed by Robert Redford, and supporting roles in other motion pictures during the late 20th century. His television work also included numerous guest appearances on series such as Perry Mason, Hawaii Five-O, and M*A*S*H.
