James Donald Cameron (1833-1918) followed closely in his father's footsteps. Simon Cameron, a key Pennsylvania Republican, had been President Lincoln's first Secretary of War and a US Senator. James Cameron was Secretary of War under President Grant (1876-1877), resigning the office to fill the US Senate seat from which his father had just resigned. Cameron represented Pennsylvania in the US Senate from until 1897.
