On June 8, 1968, ex-convict James Earl Ray (1928-1998) was arrested in London for the April 4, 1968 murder of Dr. King. He admitted to the killing, no trial was held, and on March 10, 1969, Ray was sentenced to 99 years in prison. A year was added to this sentence after he escaped for three days in 1977. Ray later recanted his admission of guilt and, supported by the family of Martin Luther King, sought a trial.
