Biography | show moreshow less
James J. "Jim" Jeffries (1875-1953) was boxing's World Heavyweight Champion from 1889 to 1904, successfully defending his title seven times and retiring undefeated. Known for his strength and stamina, Jeffries still holds the record for the earliest knockout in a title fight, 55 seconds into the first round against Jack Finnegan. He knocked out James J. Corbett twice. In 1910, Jeffries came out of retirement as the "great white hope" to fight Jack Johnson. He lost a 15-round TKO. Jeffries, a promoter and trainer in later years, was enshrined in the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990.
