Biography
Janet Gaynor (1906-1984) was a star of the late silent era and early talkies whose charming, gentle voice was ideally suited to sound in films. She won the first Academy Award for Best Actress (1927/1928) for her performances as Diane in Seventh Heaven, Angela in Street Angel and the wife in Sunrise (the early Oscars were often given for cumulative work). She was nominated for the 1938 Oscar for her role as Esther Blodgett/Vicki Lester in A Star is Born.
