Janet Leigh was born on July 6, 1927, in Merced, California and she was an American actor.
Leigh was discovered in 1946 when actor Norma Shearer saw her photograph and recommended her to MGM. She made her film debut the same year in The Romance of Rosy Ridge (1947). Through the late 1940s and early 1950s she appeared in a variety of MGM productions, including Little Women (1949), Hills of Home (1948), Act of Violence (1948), and The Red Danube (1949).
She continued to work steadily throughout the 1950s, starring in Angels in the Outfield (1951), Scaramouche (1952), and The Naked Spur (1953). In 1954 she co-starred with Tony Curtis, whom she had married in 1951, in The Black Shield of Falworth. Leigh later played Susan Vargas in Orson Welles’s Touch of Evil (1958).
Leigh’s most recognized role was Marion Crane in Psycho (1960). Her performance earned her a Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She followed this with roles in The Manchurian Candidate (1962), Bye Bye Birdie (1963), Harper (1966), and Night of the Lepus (1972). In the 1970s and 1980s she worked primarily in television, including appearances on The Love Boat, Fantasy Island, and Murder, She Wrote. She also acted alongside her daughter Jamie Lee Curtis in The Fog (1980).
