Screen and television actress Jean Hagan (1923-1977), born Jean Shirley Verhagen, was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Lina Lamont, a silent film star who makes the transition to "talkies" with the help of Debbie Reynolds, in the 1952 film, Singing in the Rain. Hagan, who made her film debut in 1949, was also seen on the big screen in such films as Adam's Rib (1949), The Asphalt Jungle (1950), Spring Reunion (1957), The Shaggy Dog (1959), Sunrise at Campobello (1960), Panic in the Year Zero! (1962) and Dead Ringer (1964). Hagan, who was nominated for three Emmy Awards (one in 1955 and two in 1956) for her role as Mrs. Margaret Williams, Danny Thomas' first wife in the TV sitcom, Make Room for Daddy, later appeared as a guest star on several TV anthologies, and she was also seen on such series as The Andy Griffith Show (1961), Ben Casey (1962), Wagon Train (1960, 1963), Dr. Kildare (1963), Starsky and Hutch (1976) and The Streets of San Francisco (1976). Hagen, who was confined to a nursing home in her later years, was last seen in the made-for-TV movie, Alexander: The Other Side of Dawn (1977).
