Jean Simmons was born on January 31, 1929, London, England and she was a British film, television, and stage actress.

Simmons began her acting career in the early 1940s. She gained early recognition for her role as young Estella in David Lean’s adaptation of Great Expectations (1946), followed by a major breakthrough as Ophelia in Laurence Olivier’s Hamlet (1948), a performance that earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. In the 1950s, Simmons signed a contract with Howard Hughes’ RKO Pictures. She appeared in a wide range of films including Angel Face (1952), The Robe (1953), Young Bess (1953), and Guys and Dolls (1955). In 1955, she became a U.S. citizen. Notably, she won a Best Actress Golden Globe for Guys and Dolls.

She was married to actor Stewart Granger from 1950 to 1960, and later to director Richard Brooks from 1960 to 1980. In the 1970s and 1980s, Simmons shifted toward television roles, earning an Emmy Award for her work in the miniseries The Thorn Birds (1983). She continued to act throughout the 1990s, with voice work in the English-language version of Howl’s Moving Castle (2004) among her final performances.

Jean Simmons died of lung cancer on January 22, 2010, nine days before her 81st birthday. Her body of work includes over 80 film and television credits, and she remains recognized for her versatility across genres and mediums during the golden era of British and American cinema.
