JIM BACKUS
Born: February 25, 1913 in Cleveland, Ohio
Died: July 03, 1989 in Los Angeles, California
James Gilmore "Jim" Backus was an accomplished American actor, voice actor, and comedian, celebrated for his distinctive performances across various platforms of entertainment. Born on February 25, 1913, in Cleveland, Ohio.
Backus began his career in radio, notably on "The Alan Young Show," before transitioning to film. He featured in many popular films of the mid-20th century, such as "Rebel Without a Cause" (1955) where he portrayed James Dean's ineffectual father, further enhancing his cinematic presence.
Backus is most notably remembered for his voice acting as the character Mr. Magoo in the animated series of the same name (1949-1959). His portrayal of the wealthy, nearsighted retiree was met with widespread acclaim, securing his reputation in the realm of animated entertainment. However, Backus's talents were not confined to animation. In live-action television, Backus was renowned for his role as Thurston Howell III, the millionaire castaway in the CBS sitcom "Gilligan's Island" (1964-1967). His distinctive characterization of the aloof and often befuddled Howell brought a unique flavor to the ensemble cast and further demonstrated his versatility as an actor.
Beyond his acting roles, Backus was also a proficient writer, co-authoring several books with his wife, Henny Backus. Among these is "Only When I Laugh," which humorously details their long and successful marriage.
