Jimmy Smits (born July 9, 1955) is an American actor known for his roles in a number of high-profile television series and films. Born in Brooklyn, New York, to a Surinamese mother and a Puerto Rican father, Smits grew up in a culturally rich environment.
Smits attended Brooklyn College and went on to receive his MFA from Cornell University. He first gained national attention for his role as attorney Victor Sifuentes on the legal drama "L.A. Law," for which he received several Emmy nominations and won one in 1990. His portrayal of the passionate and principled lawyer set the stage for a series of memorable roles that often capitalized on his strong presence and charisma. Following his success in "L.A. Law," Smits took on the role of Detective Bobby Simone in the police drama "NYPD Blue," earning multiple Emmy nominations for his performance between 1994 and 1998.
In addition to his television work, Smits has had a successful film career with roles in movies such as "Running Scared" (1986), "Switch" (1991), and "My Family" (1995). He also appeared in the "Star Wars" prequel trilogy as Senator Bail Organa, a role that introduced him to a new generation of fans.
Smits returned to television with parts in "The West Wing," playing Congressman Matt Santos, and more recently, in "Sons of Anarchy" and "How to Get Away with Murder." His work on "The West Wing" earned him critical acclaim and another Emmy nomination.
