Joan Bennett was born on February 27, 1910, in Fort Lee, New Jersey and she was an American actress.

Joan Bennett was a member of a prominent theatrical family, she was the daughter of actor Richard Bennett and the sister of actresses Constance and Barbara Bennett. She studied at Miss Hopkins School and attended various private schools before entering film in the late 1920s. Bennett began her screen career in silent films, with an early notable role in Bulldog Drummond (1929). During the 1930s, she frequently portrayed ingénue roles in Little Women (1933) and The Pursuit of Happiness (1934). In the 1940s, her image changed under the direction of Fritz Lang and others, shifting to darker, more complex characters in film noir productions. Key roles during this period included The Woman in the Window (1944) and Scarlet Street (1945), both opposite Edward G. Robinson.

Her career faced public scrutiny in 1951 after her husband, producer Walter Wanger, shot her agent, Jennings Lang, in a widely publicized incident. Though Bennett was not injured, the scandal temporarily affected her film career. She returned more prominently in the 1960s, gaining renewed recognition for her portrayal of Elizabeth Collins Stoddard on the television gothic soap opera Dark Shadows (1966–1971). She reprised her role in the 1970 film House of Dark Shadows.

Bennett's stage work included performances on Broadway, and she continued acting into the 1970s and early 1980s, with roles in films such as Suspiria (1977).
