JOAQUIN MILLER
Born: September 08, 1837 in Union County, Indiana
Died: February 17, 1913 in Oakland, California
Biography
Joaquin Miller (1837-1913) traveled as child by wagon train with his parents from Indiana to Oregon.  He led an adventurous life, joining both the California and later Alaska gold rushes and suffering serious wounds in a battle with the Modoc Indians. (He was also for a time a school teacher and an elected judge.)  Miller journeyed to London in 1870, where his first two volumes of poetry were published: Song of the Sierras and Life Among the Modocs. After gaining popularity in Europe as "the poet of the Sierras", he returned to America and built a home in Oakland California, overlooking San Francisco Bay.
