JOEY MAXIM
Born: March 28, 1922 in Cleveland, Ohio
Died: June 02, 2001 in West Palm Beach, Florida
Born Giuseppe Antonio Berardinelli on March 28, 1922, Joey Maxim was an American professional boxer known for his world light heavyweight championship reign from 1950 to 1952. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Maxim adopted his ring name from the Maxim Gun, an early type of machine gun, a nod to his powerful punching style.
Maxim started his professional boxing career in 1941, quickly gaining recognition for his methodical fighting style and durability in the ring. He established a reputation as a tough competitor, known for his ability to take hard hits and keep fighting. The pinnacle of Maxim's career came in 1950 when he won the World Light Heavyweight Title by defeating the reigning champion, Freddie Mills. Maxim successfully defended his title five times before losing it to Archie Moore in 1952.
One of Maxim's most memorable fights was not a win but a loss, in his 1952 match against legendary heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano. Maxim was one of only a handful of opponents who were able to last a full 15 rounds against Marciano, who retired undefeated. Maxim's boxing career spanned over 14 years, during which he competed in more than 100 professional fights.
