Johan Santana was born on March 13, 1979, in Tovar, Mérida, Venezuela. He is a Venezuelan former professional baseball pitcher who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 2000 to 2012, primarily with the Minnesota Twins and New York Mets.

Santana began his professional career when he was signed by the Houston Astros as an amateur free agent in 1995. In 1999, he was selected by the Florida Marlins in the Rule 5 Draft and immediately traded to the Minnesota Twins, where he made his MLB debut on April 3, 2000. Initially used as a reliever, Santana transitioned to a starting role by the early 2000s, where he developed into one of the league’s most effective pitchers. His breakout season came in 2004 when he won the American League Cy Young Award, leading the league in wins (20), earned run average (2.61), and strikeouts (265). He won a second Cy Young Award in 2006, again leading the majors in several pitching categories, including ERA and strikeouts. Santana was selected to four All-Star Games (2005–2007, 2009) and earned a Gold Glove Award in 2007.

In February 2008, Santana was traded to the New York Mets, signing a six-year contract. He continued his dominance in the National League, leading the league in ERA in his first season with the Mets. On June 1, 2012, Santana pitched the first no-hitter in Mets franchise history against the St. Louis Cardinals, throwing 134 pitches. This milestone became one of the defining moments of his career. Chronic shoulder injuries curtailed Santana’s playing time after 2012, and repeated surgeries prevented a full return to the major leagues. His career record includes 139 wins, 78 losses, a 3.20 ERA, and 1,988 strikeouts.
