John Drew, Jr. (1853-1927), the eldest son of American Shakespearean actors John Drew (1827-1862) and Louisa Lane Drew, made his acting debut in Philadelphia in 1873 under the management of his mother. By 1879, he was the leading man in Augustin Daly's Company and was equally popular with audiences and caricaturists. Drew, who was best known for his characterization of Petruchio, made his Broadway debut in 1902 (The Mummy and the Humming Bird) and appeared in numerous plays on the Great White Way until 1927. His sister, Georgiana, married Maurice Barrymore and was the mother of actors Lionel, Ethel and John Barrymore. Drew acted with his niece and nephews at the Waldorf-Astoria in the 1890s.
