John Garibaldi Sargent (1860-1939), a graduate of Tufts College, served as State Attorney General of Vermont from 1900-1902 and 1908-1912. He was appointed U.S. Attorney General on March 18, 1925 and served in the Coolidge Cabinet until March 5, 1929, succeeding Harlan F. Stone who had been appointed to the Supreme Court. (Remember that Presidential terms ended in March until passage of the 20th Amendment in 1933.) After leaving Washington, he served and chairman of the Vermont Commission on Uniform State Laws and was a trustee of the Black River Academy.
