JOHN LITHGOW
Born: October 19, 1945 in Rochester, New York
Biography | show moreshow less
No less a newspaper than the Wall Street Journal has called Lithgow ( b. 1945) "the film character actor of his generation." Lithgow has played everything from fish-out-of-water aliens (Third Rock from the Sun, 1996-2001) and Italian mad scientists (The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension!, 1984) to malevolent villains (Ricochet, 1991) and transsexual football jocks (The World According to Garp,1982). He's also something of a Renaissance man, being a composer and performer of children's songs and fair-to-middlin' painter. Lithgow got his start in the early 1970s on Broadway and remained in New York for many years, establishing himself as one of Broadway's most respected stars - not to mention earning two Tony Awards for his performances in The Changing Room (1973) and Sweet Smell of Success (2002). Lithgow got his first real break and a Best Supporting Actor nomination from The World According to Garp. He earned a second Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for Terms of Endearment (1983).
