John Milton Niles (1787-1856) was a judge and postmaster in Hartford, Connecticut before being entering the US Senate as a Democrat (1835-1839), but lost a bid for Governor in 1840. President Van Buren appointed him Postmaster General that year. Niles returned to the Senate (1843-1849), but ran again for Governor in 1849, having followed his patron Van Buren into the Free Soil Party. Shortly before his death he was named to the National Committee of the newly formed Republican Party. Niles wrote a history of Latin America and a biography of Oliver Hazard Perry.
