Biography
John McIntire (1907-1991) is best known for his Western roles, both in films and on television. He gained wide recognition for his two most popular television roles: Chris Hale, the trail master on Wagon Train (1961-1965) and Clay Grainger, the owner of the Shiloh Ranch, on NBC's The Virginian, television's first 90 minute Western series (1967-1970). The latter series also featured his real-life wife, Jeanette Nolan, as his wife, Holly Grainger (1968-1970). The couple, who met while performing on radio, were married from 1935 until McIntire's death in 1991 and had two children, including actor Tim McIntire, who predeceased them.
