John "Mule" Miles played outfield for the Chicago American Giants of the Negro League (1946-1949), earning his nickname from a manager who exclaimed, "You hit a ball as hard as a mule kicks." He hit 11 homers in as many games in 1947. During World War II, Miles as an aviation mechanic had helped train the Tuskegee airmen. In later life, Miles coached local baseball and basketball teams in his native San Antonio, while pursuing careers in law enforcement and freelance photography.
