Biography
John Philip Sousa (1854-1932) is known chiefly for writing over 100 marches, including The Dauntless Battalion and The Gallant Seventh, penned in the year he signed this photograph, earning him the title of "The March King". In 1922, Sousa, who also composed operettas, songs and other musical works, also wrote two suites: Impressions at the Movies and Leaves from My Notebook. Sousa, who had studied violin and trombone during his childhood, joined the U.S. Marine Band at age 13, playing with the group from 1867-1872. After later playing in popular orchestras, he returned in 1880 as director of the Marine Band, which is called the "President's Own". Sousa's marches include such classics as The Stars and Stripes Forever and The Washington Post.
