Biography | show moreshow less
JOHHNY CARSON (1925-2005), made one of his earliest national appearances on The Jack Benny Program. In 1954, while serving as one of the writers on The Red Skelton Show, Carson appeared on the show when Skelton had a minor accident during rehearsal. From May 23, 1954 to September 5, 1954, Carson hosted a prime-time game show, Earn Your Vacation, on CBS, and he appeared briefly in the winter of early 1955 on the CBS Morning Show, filling in for the vacationing Jack Paar. From 1955-1956, Carson hosted two CBS variety shows, first on Thursday nights then on daytime, each called The Johnny Carson Show. On September 30, 1957, Do You Trust Your Wife?, hosted by Carson, premiered on ABC. By July 1958, the show's name was changed to Who Do You Trust? A few months later, Carson was teamed with a new announcer, Ed McMahon. On October 1, 1962, Carson left Who Do You Trust? to succeed Jack Paar as the permanent host of The Tonight Show, bringing McMahon along as his announcer. The immensely popular Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson ran on NBC from October 1, 1962 to May 22, 1992. Carson became a major national celebrity with his celebrity guests and timely comic monologs. He won 6 Emmys and many other awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1992) and the Kennedy Center Lifetime Achievement Award (1993). His farewell show in 1992 was a national event.
