JOHNNY RUIZ
Born: January 04, 1972
Biography
JOHNNY RUIZ, known as "the Quiet Man", won a rematch against Evander Holyfield to become the first Latino world heavyweight boxing champion. Ruiz, who divided his childhood between Puerto Rico and Massachusetts, is also claimed by New England as its first heavyweight champ since Rocky Marciano. Defending his title repeatedly, losing and then regaining it, Ruiz lost it, perhaps for good, to the man who became Russia's first world heavyweight champ, Nicolay Valuev. In November 2006, Ruiz faced off in Dusseldorf, Germany against Uzbekistan's RUSLAN CHAGAEV to win the right for another shot at Valuev. Chagaev, called "the White Tyson", entered the match undefeated. Chagaev won the bout in a very close, split decision.
