JONATHAN HARRIS
Born: November 06, 1914 in New York City, New York
Died: November 03, 2002 in Encino, California
Jonathan Harris (born November 6, 1914 – November 3, 2002) was an American character actor. Born Jonathan Daniel Charasuchin in the Bronx, New York City, to a poor Russian Jewish family, he worked as a pharmacy clerk before winning a scholarship to the Professional Children's School.
Harris made his acting debut on the stage in New York, changing his last name to Harris for professional purposes. He moved to Hollywood in the 1950s and began to appear in television shows. His first steady acting job was on the soap opera "The Third Man" as Bradford Webster.
He is perhaps best remembered for his role as the pompous and cowardly Dr. Zachary Smith in the 1960s television series "Lost in Space." Harris' character started as a saboteur in the show's pilot episode but evolved into a comic relief figure, and his catchphrases, including "Oh, the pain," became part of popular culture. Beyond "Lost in Space," Harris worked in various other television productions. He appeared in guest roles in episodes of "Zorro," "The Twilight Zone," and "The Bill Dana Show." In film, he appeared in "The Big Fisherman" (1959) and "A Bug's Life" (1998), where he voiced the character of Manny, an old and experienced praying mantis actor.
In his later years, Harris continued to act, often lending his voice to animated productions. He was also a favorite in the convention circuits, where he would recount his days on "Lost in Space" with great fondness.
