Biography | show moreshow less
Joseph Rotblat was born on November 4, 1908, in Warsaw, Poland, then part of the Russian Empire. He was a physicist and a prominent advocate for nuclear disarmament.

Educated at the Free University of Poland and the University of Warsaw, Rotblat moved to Britain in 1939 to work on the atomic bomb as part of the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos. His involvement in the project ended in 1944 when he chose to leave upon learning that Nazi Germany was no longer pursuing its own bomb. This decision marked the beginning of his lifelong commitment to nuclear nonproliferation.

After World War II, Rotblat became a naturalized British citizen and served as a professor of physics at the University of Liverpool and later at St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College in London, specializing in nuclear/radiation physics. He was instrumental in the development of medical applications of nuclear technology, particularly in the treatment of cancer.

Joseph Rotblat's most significant impact, however, was in his peace efforts. In 1955, he was one of the eleven signatories of the Russell-Einstein Manifesto, which highlighted the dangers posed by nuclear weapons and called for world leaders to seek peaceful resolutions to conflicts. The manifesto led to the founding of the Pugwash Conferences, which provided a forum for scientists and public figures to discuss ways to reduce the arms race and eliminate weapons of mass destruction. Rotblat's advocacy for disarmament was recognized globally, culminating in his Nobel Peace Prize.
