JULES FEIFFER
Born: January 26, 1929 in New York City, New York
Born on January 26, 1929, in The Bronx, New York City, Jules Feiffer is an American syndicated cartoonist and author, renowned for his satirical cartoons and contributions to the world of literature and theater. His career, which spans several decades, has seen him delve into diverse forms of art, establishing him as a multifaceted talent in the world of American arts and letters.
After attending James Monroe High School, Feiffer became an assistant to cartoonist Will Eisner, working on his iconic comic strip, "The Spirit." This experience was instrumental in shaping Feiffer's early career. By the 1950s, Feiffer's own eponymous cartoon strip made its debut in "The Village Voice", where it ran for over 40 years. The strip, known for its acerbic wit and commentary on politics, relationships, and society, earned him a Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 1986.
Beyond his contributions to cartooning, Feiffer branched into other mediums. His play "Little Murders" (1967) won an Obie Award and was adapted into a feature film. He also penned the screenplay for "Carnal Knowledge" (1971), a critically acclaimed film directed by Mike Nichols and starring Jack Nicholson. His foray into children's literature resulted in several notable books, with "The Man in the Ceiling" (1993) being particularly prominent. Furthermore, Feiffer's memoir, "Backing Into Forward" (2010), sheds light on his life, artistic journey, and the socio-political landscape he often critiqued.
Jules Feiffer's contributions extend beyond his Pulitzer Prize. He has been the recipient of a George Polk Award, an Academy Award for his animated short "Munro" (1961), and membership in the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
