JULIA SANDERSON
Born: August 20, 1888 in Springfield, Massachusetts
Died: January 27, 1975 in Springfield, Massachusetts
Julia Sanderson (born August 27, 1888, in Springfield, Massachusetts - died January 27, 1975, in Springfield, Massachusetts) was an American singer and actress, well-known for her contributions to the theatre in the early 20th century.
Born as Julia Sackett, she changed her name to Julia Sanderson early in her career. Her first significant role was in the Broadway production of "The Dairymaids" in 1907, which marked the start of a prolific stage career. Over the next decade, she became one of the best-loved figures on the American musical stage. In 1914, Sanderson portrayed Princess Flavia in "The Princess Pat", a role that solidified her popularity. However, perhaps her most memorable role was in the musical "Sybil" in 1916, in which she played the titular character. Sanderson's performance was widely praised, and the show ran for over a year on Broadway. In 1919, Sanderson began performing with comedian Frank Crumit. Their on-stage chemistry led to a successful partnership, which culminated in their marriage in 1928. The duo transitioned to radio in the 1930s, co-starring in the popular NBC show "The Blackstone Plantation". Sanderson also found success in England, particularly through her performance in the London production of "The Sunshine Girl" in 1912. Her time on the British stage extended her fame beyond American shores.
Off the stage, Sanderson was known for her philanthropy. She was actively involved in charity work, particularly in support of the World War I war effort. Sanderson retired from show business in 1939 but continued her charitable efforts in her later years.
