JULIE ANDREWS
Born: October 01, 1935 in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, England, United Kingdom
Julie Andrews was born on October 1, 1935 in Surrey, England and she is a British actress, singer, and author whose career has spanned film, stage, and television.
Andrews began performing on stage as a child, showcasing her vocal range in music hall and concert performances during World War II. She made her professional stage debut in the late 1940s and quickly gained attention for her soprano voice. In 1954, she appeared on Broadway in The Boy Friend, leading to starring roles in My Fair Lady (1956) as Eliza Doolittle and Camelot (1960) as Queen Guinevere.
Her film debut came with Mary Poppins (1964), for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. She followed this with another iconic performance as Maria von Trapp in The Sound of Music (1965), which became one of the highest-grossing films of its era. Andrews continued her film career with notable works including Hawaii (1966), Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967), Victor/Victoria (1982), and The Americanization of Emily (1964).
During the 1970s and 1980s, Andrews also worked extensively in television, earning Emmy Awards for performances in variety specials. She collaborated with her husband, director Blake Edwards, in films such as 10 (1979), S.O.B. (1981), and Victor/Victoria (1982), the latter earning her a Golden Globe Award.
In the 1990s, Andrews underwent vocal cord surgery that damaged her singing voice, shifting her focus to acting, writing, and narration. She later found success with younger audiences as Queen Clarisse Renaldi in The Princess Diaries (2001) and its sequel, and as the voice of Queen Lillian in the Shrek franchise. Andrews has authored several memoirs and children’s books, including Home (2008) and Home Work (2019). She was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) in 2000 for services to the performing arts.
