Julie Newmar was born on August 16, 1933, in Los Angeles, California and she is an American actor, dancer, and inventor whose career spans stage, film, and television.

Newmar trained in classical ballet during childhood and began performing professionally as a teenager. She worked as a dancer in early film musicals, including Serpent of the Nile (1953). On Broadway, she appeared in the musical Silk Stockings (1955) and won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her performance as Katrin Sveg in The Marriage-Go-Round (1958). She reprised the role in the 1960 film adaptation.

Her most recognizable screen role came with the Batman television series, in which she portrayed Catwoman during the show’s second and third seasons. Newmar’s interpretation of the character remains one of her most noted performances. She also made numerous guest appearances on television throughout the 1960s and 1970s, including roles on Route 66, The Twilight Zone, The Beverly Hillbillies, Bewitched, and Love, American Style.

Newmar continued acting in films such as Mackenna’s Gold (1969) and Hysterical (1983), and she appeared in later television productions including Buck Rogers in the 25th Century and Night Court. In 1995 she made a cameo appearance in To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar, a film named in her honor. Outside acting, Newmar is known for her business activities and design patents, including innovations for women’s lingerie and hosiery. She has also been active in real estate investment and community preservation efforts in Los Angeles.
