Swedish tenor Jussi Björling (1911-1960) made his operatic debut with the Royal Theater in Stockholm in 1930 and sang with European companies, including the Vienna State Opera and the Dresden State Opera, before making his U.S. debut in concert at Carnegie Hall in 1937. The following year, he made his debut with New York's Metropolitan Opera. From 1945-1960, Björling, who specialized in French and Italian opera, sang nearly every role.
