KAY BOYLE
Born: February 19, 1902 in St. Paul, Minnesota
Died: December 27, 1992 in Mill Valley, California
Biography
Kay Boyle (1902-1992) lived most of her young adult life among avant-garde writers in Europe, returning to the US after World War II. She wrote 40 books, including 14 novels, 8 poetry collections, 11 volumes of short fiction, and many translations and essays. Blacklisting during the McCarthy era took away much of her employment at The New Yorker and other US periodicals. Boyle was politically active for civil rights, and against nuclear weapons and the war in Vietnam. She won two O. Henry Awards for short fiction, two Guggenheim Fellowships, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Endowment for the Arts.
