KEN VENTURI
Born: May 15, 1931 in San Francisco, California
Died: May 17, 2013 in Rancho Mirage, California
Born in San Francisco, California, on May 15, 1931, Ken Venturi was an esteemed American professional golfer and later a celebrated television golf commentator.
Venturi's journey to the pinnacle of golf began at an early age when he won the San Francisco City Championship while still a teenager. He turned professional in 1956, and by 1958, he was a PGA Tour champion, with a win at the St. Paul Open Invitational. His crowning achievement as a professional golfer came in 1964 when Venturi won the U.S. Open, played at the Congressional Country Club. It was an arduous competition marked by extreme heat, and Venturi's perseverance and performance under these challenging conditions were widely acclaimed. Over the course of his career, Venturi amassed 14 PGA Tour wins. However, he had to retire prematurely due to carpal tunnel syndrome in both wrists. This setback did not end his association with golf, and Venturi transitioned to a successful career in broadcasting.
Venturi was a broadcaster for CBS Sports for 35 years, beginning in 1968, where his insightful analysis and passion for the game helped shape golf's television coverage. He was known for his ability to succinctly communicate complex golf strategies to viewers, and his work in broadcasting won him an Emmy Award in 1985.
