Kenzaburo Oe (born in Shikoku, Japan in 1935) was awarded the 1994 Nobel Prize in Literature for being an author "who with poetic force creates an imagined world, where life and myth condense to form a disconcerting picture of the human predicament today." Oe, the writer of novels, short stories and essays, is best known for his 1967 work, The Silent Cry: A Novel. His first novel, Bud-Nipping, Lamb Shooting, was published in 1958, and Oe is also the author of such books as A Personal Matter (1964), acclaimed short stories and essays, including Hiroshima Notes (1965).
