KING GEORGE II (GREAT BRITAIN)
Born: 10/20/1683 in Herrenhausen Palace, Hanover, Electorate of Brunswick-Luneburg, Holy Roman Empire
Died: October 25, 1760 in Kensington Palace, London, England, United Kingdom
George II was King of Great Britain and Ireland, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg and Prince-elector of the Holy Roman Empire from 1727 until his death in 1760. Born in Hanover, Germany, on November 30, 1683, he was the last British monarch born outside the United Kingdom.
Ascending to the throne in 1727 following the death of his father, George I, his reign was marked by a series of military conflicts involving his kingdoms, much of the rest of Europe, and places farther afield in Africa, the Americas, and Asia. He is particularly known for his role in the War of Austrian Succession and the Seven Years' War. In 1743, he led his armies personally to victory at the Battle of Dettingen, becoming the last British monarch to command troops in the field. George II's reign also saw the acceleration of the shift of political power from the monarch to the Parliament, marking the beginning of the modern British system of constitutional monarchy. He died on October 25, 1760, in London, England, and was succeeded by his grandson, George III.
