KING LOUIS XIII (FRANCE)
Died: 01/01/1643
Biography
King Louis XIII (1601-1643), succeeded his assassinated father when he was nine years old, King Henry IV, under the regency of his mother, Marie de' Medici. Although declared of age in 1614, Louis was excluded from the affairs of state by his domineering mother until 1617 when he sent his mother into exile. In 1624, two years after reconciling with his mother, he entrusted the government to her protégé, Cardinal Richelieu, who strengthened royal authority and centralized government control. Louis' reign was noted for its achievements in the arts and religion as well as the country becoming a leading European power.
