Kingsley Amis (1922-1995) began writing realistic novels about everyday English life (Lucky Jim, 1954; Take a Girl Like You,1960) . His later works moved in less conventional directions, such as his metaphysical ghost story, The Green Man (1976); science fiction, The Alteration (1976); and even a James Bond novelization (Colonel Sun, 1968). Renowned for his heavy drinking and womanizing, Amis moved across the political spectrum from youthful communist to middle-aged conservative, an evolution he explained in "Why Lucky Jim Turned Right" (1967).
