Biography | show moreshow less
Larry Bell was born in 1939 in Chicago, Illinois and he is an American contemporary artist best known for his association with the Light and Space movement, a group of artists active primarily in Southern California beginning in the 1960s whose work explored perception, light, and materiality.

Bell studied briefly at the Chouinard Art Institute (now Cal Arts) before leaving formal education to pursue an independent artistic career. During the early 1960s, he became part of a loose community of artists working in and around Los Angeles who experimented with industrial materials and optical effects.

Bell gained recognition for his use of glass and metal-coated surfaces, particularly vacuum-deposited thin films applied to glass. These materials allowed him to explore transparency, reflection, and the interaction of light with space. His best-known works include glass cube sculptures, which appear alternately solid and transparent depending on lighting conditions and viewer position. These works became central examples of Light and Space art.

Throughout the late 1960s and 1970s, Bell exhibited widely in the United States and internationally. His work was included in major museum exhibitions that helped define post-minimalist and perceptual art practices. During this period, he also expanded into other media, including painting, works on paper, and sculptural forms using industrial materials.

Bell’s career has been marked by periods of relocation and experimentation. In the late 1970s, he spent extended time in New Mexico, where the landscape influenced shifts in his materials and visual language. His later work incorporated earth tones, organic references, and new surface treatments, while continuing to investigate light and perception.

His artwork has been collected by numerous major institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art, , the Los Angeles Contemporary Museum of Art, and other international museums. Retrospective exhibitions of his work have highlighted his sustained contribution to American contemporary art over multiple decades.
