Biography
Lauritz Melchior (1890-1973) made his major opera debut with the Copenhagen Royal Opera in 1913. He was the first operatic tenor to sing on radio, appearing in comedy and variety programs as well as operas. A frequent performer at New York's Metropolitan Opera from 1926 until his retirement from the opera stage in 1950, and continued to appear in films and radio and in touring performances.
