Born: October 13, 1925 in Mineola, Long Island, New York
Died: August 03, 1966 in Hollywood, California
Biography
Lenny Bruce (1925-1966), had learned timing, delivery and improvisation from has-been comedians and struggling newcomers before a move to California in 1953 proved to be a turning point for him. Physically, Bruce could not keep the pace of performing nightly, so, suffering from a nervous disorder, he began taking prescription drugs and developed a dependency problem. Divorced in 1957, Bruce moved his routine from burlesque houses to the popular bistros and clubs of San Francisco. His fame came rapidly, but so did trouble. Obscenity and drug charges followed him wherever he appeared. Inevitably, Bruce was cleared of most charges, but the stigma remained. Persecuted during his time, Bruce nonetheless set the stage for modern comedy standards with his precision, delivery and cathartic profanity directed at the hypocritical.
