LIBERACE
Born: May 16, 1919 in West Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Died: February 04, 1987 in Palm Springs, California
Władziu Valentino “Liberace” Liberace was born on May 16, 1919 in West Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and he was an American pianist, singer, actor, and showman whose career spanned concerts, recordings, television, films, and endorsements.
From an early age Liberace displayed musical talent, beginning piano lessons young and mastering pieces by ear as a child. He trained intensively and even appeared as a classical soloist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as a teenager. However, he soon reinvented his performance style — blending classical technique with popular songs and showmanship, famously describing his approach as “classical music with the boring parts left out.”
By the 1940s and 1950s Liberace was performing in top nightclubs and hotels across the United States, dazzling audiences with his technical skill, charismatic stage presence, and signature props like the ornate candelabra perched atop his piano. He embraced costumes, choreography, and audience interaction, earning the nickname “Mr. Showmanship.” His residency in Las Vegas and syndicated television program The Liberace Show made him one of the most recognizable entertainers of his era.
Liberace also recorded extensively; his albums mixed standards, popular music, and lighter classical pieces, and he earned multiple gold records over his career. Though critics were often mixed on his musicianship, his popularity with mainstream audiences was enormous — at the height of his fame he was reportedly the highest-paid entertainer in the world, with massive concert residencies and fan clubs spanning the globe.
