Biography
Lila Lee (born July 25, 1901 - November 13, 1973) was a prominent American actress in the silent film era and into the early sound period. Born Augusta Appel in Union Hill, New Jersey, she emerged as a well-known talent during Hollywood's formative years.
Initially drawn to performing through her church choir, Lee's career gained traction when she won a beauty contest at the age of 16. She subsequently attracted the attention of the Vitagraph Studios, who cast her in her debut film, "The Cruise of the Make-Believes" (1918). Her significant roles in "Male and Female" (1919) and "Blood and Sand" (1922), both opposite Rudolph Valentino, solidified her star status. Lee navigated the transition to talking pictures with notable aplomb. Her portrayal of Trixie in "The Unholy Three" (1930) underscored her ability to adapt to the new medium, and her performance in "The Secret Witness" (1931) was another significant achievement during this period.
