Biography
Lillian Roth (1910-1980, born Lillian Rutstein in Boston, Massachusetts) was an American singer and actress. The actress began her professional career at six, when she modeled as a living statue holding a lamp of knowledge for the Educational Pictures trademark, and debuted on Broadway in Penrod in 1918. In all, she had 20 TV and movie credits, with most between 1929 and 1934, and sang in over 10 movies. She also appeared in a total of nine Broadway shows, with most of these between 1918 and 1932. But Roth was an alcoholic and hit the skids in the 1930s. She married and divorced a total of five times in her life, with the first four marriages ending before 1945. Roth retired from films after 1934's Masks and Memories and became a nightclub singer; she retuned to the cinema over 40 years later with 1976's Communion.
