French-American coloratura soprano Lily Pons (1904-1976) first appeared at the Metropolitan Opera in 1931. The opera revived roles especially for her, such as Delibes' "Lakmé," Donizetti's "La Fille du Regiment" and Rimsky-Korsakov's "Le Coq d'or". Pons also appeared in four films, I Dream Too Much (1935), That Girl From Paris (1936), Hitting a New High (1937) and Carnegie Hall (1947). In 1938, she married conductor André Kostelanetz; the couple performed together until the marriage ended in 1958.
