Louis Bromfield was an influential American author and conservationist, born on December 27, 1896 in Mansfield, Ohio. Bromfield earned recognition for his prolific literary output and pioneering contributions to sustainable farming practices.

After studying journalism at Columbia University, Bromfield served in the American Field Service during World War I, an experience that deeply impacted him. Post-war, he moved to Paris and became involved in the city's vibrant literary scene. Here he wrote "The Green Bay Tree" (1924), his first commercial success. Bromfield's novel "Early Autumn" (1926) won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, firmly establishing his literary reputation. He produced a steady stream of novels throughout the 1920s and 1930s, including "A Good Woman" (1927) and "The Farm" (1933), both of which were well-received.

In the mid-1930s, Bromfield returned to Ohio and purchased a plot of land near his hometown. Here he established Malabar Farm, which became an exemplar of sustainable and organic farming practices. Bromfield's innovative farming techniques garnered much attention and he became a sought-after speaker on agricultural topics. Bromfield also authored several non-fiction books about farming, including "Malabar Farm" (1947) and "Out of the Earth" (1950), which promoted the principles of soil conservation and sustainable farming. Today, Malabar Farm is a state park, serving as a testament to Bromfield's enduring impact on environmental conservation and sustainable agriculture.
